Ghost in the Shell (攻殻機動隊, Gōsuto In Za Sheru/Kōkaku Kidōtai) est un film d'animation de Mamoru Oshii sorti en 1995. Il s'agit d'une adaptation cinématographique du manga du même nom de Masamune Shirow. Le film se déroule dans un univers cyberpunk situé dans un futur proche, et relate l'enquête menée par deux cyborgs, le major Motoko Kusanagi et Batou, à la recherche d'un mystérieux pirate informatique.
Un second long-métrage reprenant certains personnages, Innocence : Ghost in the Shell 2, a été supervisé par le même réalisateur en 2004. Mamoru Oshii a également adapté le manga sous la forme d'une série animée, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, en 2002-2005. En 2008, un remake du premier film avec nouveaux effets spéciaux a été réalisé sous le nom Ghost in the Shell 2.0.

Synopsis
L'histoire se déroule dans un monde futuriste cyberpunk et nous fait suivre les aventures de Motoko Kusanagi, dite « major », et Batou, deux cyborgs appartenant à une unité spéciale du gouvernement (la section 9, anti-terroriste) qui essaient de capturer le pirate informatique le plus dangereux et insaisissable au monde, connu seulement sous le pseudonyme de Puppet master (« le marionnettiste »).
Cette traque se fait sur un fond de guerre des services avec la section 6, qui s'intéresse elle aussi au Puppet master dans le cadre d'un projet mystérieux, le « projet 2501 ».
